FAQs
First, what does 2:1 or 1:1 ratio mean?
It describes how heavy the weight feels compared to what you select on the weight stack.
-
2:1 Ratio (Half Weight): If you select 80kg, you feel 40kg.
This gives you the option to train more controlled with smaller increments (2:1) or heavy (1:1).
Why would I want a 2:1 ratio?
A 2:1 ratio is great because it lets you increase weight in smaller, more manageable jumps. For example, on exercises like bicep curls or reverse flys, a 5kg increase can feel like too much and can throw off your form. With a 2:1 ratio, that same change is a 2.5kg jump instead, making it easier to progress smoothly and safely.
Why would I want a 1:1 ratio?
A 1:1 ratio is ideal when you want to lift heavy and build strength, because you feel the full weight you select on the stack. This is especially useful for big movements like lat pulldowns, rows, and heavy cable presses where you want maximum resistance and faster progression without paying for huge weight stacks.
How do I change between the 1:1 and 2:1 ratio on the convertible models?
The convertible (1:1 ↔ 2:1) models have an extra cable connection point/handle on each trolley. You change the ratio by how you connect the cable to the handle. Use one connection point for 2:1 (half resistance), or connect both for 1:1 (full resistance). It takes only a few seconds to switch, by combining the 2 carabiners together.
Which option is right for me?
Choose the 2:1 only Olympus Functional Trainer if you don’t need a huge amount of weight and want a setup that’s simple, smooth, and easy to use. These models are perfect for most home gym training, especially for controlled movements like flys, curls, triceps, shoulders, and general strength work.
Because it’s a fixed 2:1 system, it’s also simpler with fewer moving parts, and the trolley feels lighter and easier to move up and down during adjustments.
If you want to train heavy on lat pulldowns and rows but don’t want to pay for a massive weight stack, choose the Convertible 2:1 ↔ 1:1 model. You can use 2:1 for smooth, controlled accessory work, then switch to 1:1 when you need full resistance for heavier pulls and rows.
